Better Speakers and Leaders

Toastmasters is the best way for anyone — whether a working professional, student, stay-at-home parent or retiree — to improve his or her communication and leadership skills. Members overcome the fear of public speaking and learn skills that aid them in becoming more successful. Toastmasters creates better listeners and stronger team members and leaders who can comfortably give and receive constructive evaluations.

What can you expect at a typical meeting?

Speeches

There are usually four volunteers to give a speech. Each one prepares a 5-10 minute speech on a topic of their choice. What is the topic? Each new member receives a manual which elaborates the essential elements for public speaking, so each speech will have a focus, be it body language, vocal variety, persuasion, etc. But within those frameworks, you can speak about anything at all.

Evaluation

Feedback is vital for improvement. Each speaker has an evaluator who provides a 3 minute spoken evaluation. Preparing feedback and delivering it in a coherent, growth focused manner is both challenging and very satisfying. Giving and receiving feedback is central to the growth of the speaker and the evaluator.

Impromptu Speaking

The elevator pitch, an exchange in the street, or being called into your boss’s office: the ability to speak off the cuff, coherently, cogently, and with confidence is key to a dynamic life. Any skill can be practiced. Members speak for 2 minutes on a given topic. It can be daunting, fun, or exhilarating. The more you do it, the easier it becomes, and this is one of the key skills you can take to your workplace and life.

Other roles

At each meeting we also keep an eye on other key skills that will help you develop into an effective speaker.

Time Keeping – Winston Churchill famously said “I’m going to make a long speech because I’ve not had the time to prepare a short one.”  It’s easy to be long winded, but our Timer keeps people to time so they learn this essential skill so you wow, not bore, your audience.

Grammar – though Toastmasters is not a foreign language learning environment, our members do improve their use of the english language through direct feedback.

Your Commitment

You decide the tempo.  You can attend meetings at a rhythm that suits your life schedule, and you work through the manuals at the rate of your own choosing.  At every meeting you have the chance to work on your communication and leadership skills, and you will receive direct, instant feedback from other members.
